Racism, Health Disparities, Health Inequities, and Black Women’s Health and Healthy Activity (Chapter)

This study explores the implication of understanding racism as a multifactorial causation mechanism that adversely and negatively impacts African-American women’s health and healthy activity. The authors use qualitative data from Bridging the Gap, which examines health disparities in the African-American community funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and quantitative data from the Sexism and Racism study examining the effects of sexism and racism on Black women to transition into a discussion on the impact of experienced and perceived racism on active Black women’s health. The findings from both studies address the paucity of research on Black women’s experiences of racism and health disparities in African-American life.

Transforming Community and Ourselves through Heart and Mind Work (Chapter)

Interrogating the four principles of diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging, this chapter focuses on our individual responsibilities for personal growth as champions for equity and how we can develop the scaffolding required for assigning cultural hierarchical value within curricula, programs, and ecosystems. The chapter illuminates the ways our educational communities can shape cultures that inspire a sense of belonging and to show that care – in both heart and mind – can serve as the foundation for all inclusion and equity-minded work – and thus justice.
